For weeks now I have searched myself to find the right words to welcome you into my world and explain what theChurch of the Virgin Hunger and my music are about. I have to confess I am still searching. If I had to tell you in a single phrase what I, this Church of theVirgin Hunger, and the music you will find here stand for, my answer would be:

Passion, pure and complex

I found myself in theChurch of the Virgin Hunger after a long string of life experiences brought me to the point where I could no longer live in denial. It is a long story but I will try to briefly summarize. I have spent most of my life denying my true passions and my true nature. I felt that in order to live authentically I had to risk losing the respect and security of the world I grew up in. In an academic, spiritual, and sensual sense, I was so hungry for the things my instincts told me I needed to be whole, but I continued to starve myself in order to keep a sense of control and security. However, this denial of my authentic self only made me feel more and more out of control and unhappy.

All the desires you ever had but never spoke of. The flesh you never tasted. The moment you never experienced. The want left unsatisfied. The virgin hungers. I donÂ't think there is anyone of us who isnÂ't touched by them. These hungers are a part of the landscape that makes up the human experience. They keep you awake, they spark lightning, and they feed the urges of the human heart. They warm the imagination and stoke the fire of the creative spirit; they make you crazy but they set you free. Ambiguity, desire, want, wonder, love, fear, lust, IÂ've always dreamed I could build myself a cathedral from these feelings, and by doing so I could make my hunger a holy experience. This is how theChurch was born.

I think artists in particular call upon their hungers when they make their art, no matter if their medium is a palette of paint, the strings of a guitar, or the delicate structure of the human psyche. This time maybe it is the hunger of the ego, or next time itÂ's unrequited love. I cannot pretend to understand every artist, but I know that which drives me. You could say IÂ'm driven to do this because I feel like I was born hooked to a train thatÂ's speeding away from me. And the only thing that rescues me is to surrender to this one passion and turn myself over to this music. I donÂ't know if this makes it any easier for you to understand, and I donÂ't know if it should. Ambiguity, desire, want, wonder, love, lust - they live on the vanguard of the soul and defy definition. I donÂ't believe anyone is epicure enough to tell how to define your passions, where they will find you, and what you will find when they do. The question becomes not what is the Virgin Hunger but rather, how hungry are we?

So if the journey of your life has brought you here, you are not alone. I think eventually we all find ourselves standing before the doors of theChurch that our pain and passions have built...
