Until The Autumn starts out with the band’s best track, Berkeley. If you saw the same MTV2 promo for Austin Week that I saw, it was Berkeley that you heard. It is the only song on that album that stands out in terms of uniqueness, and that’s difficult to do in this sort of Indie post rock genre. I love the piano and the high harmonies sung by the band collectively. Marry those elements with subtle drums and a light guitar, and you have a brilliant song. Berkeley sounds like a song Coldplay wishes they had done.
Another standout track to me is The Flock. It is not as unique or original sounding as Berkeley, but is beautiful none the less. It starts slow, builds, then smooths itself out nicely to create an indie rock gem. In The Flock you’ll hear acoustic guitar, electronic key board effects and melodic electric guitar with great vocals that kind of whisper.
How It Is, the only other track on the album I liked, is more upbeat than the fore mentioned album favorites of mine. It kind of has a 60s feel to it, sounding like something The Beach Boys would have recorded at the same time God Only Knows came out. The difference is in the brass in the second half of the song, which compliment rather than over power the vocals.
Until The Autumn from The Story of was an easy listen, but only a few tracks did it for me. However, it is one of those albums you have to be in the mood for. In the case of Until The Autumn, it would best to listen to while relaxing or winding down as it is very chill and mellow. It will put you to sleep, but in a good way. There are certainly occasions when you just need records like that.
As far as the whole MTV2 thing goes, I don’t get why they were selected over a lot of other more buzz worthy bands Austin has to offer. The Story Of is just one of many talented bands MTV2 could have gone with to showcase Austin. They are good, but not whom I would have chosen. It just goes to show you though, Austin is a plethora of musical talent.
