QUICK BIO

Like so many musicians working in Austin, David Lee Hess and Cliff Brown Jr. crossed paths at gigs theyÂ'd shared around town. Mutual respect and admiration of each others' unique talent and timbre led the duo to perform for months on the Texas espresso circuit and resulted in three Â"fact-finding missionÂ" recordings on KVRX 91.7Â's Live Set, KUTÂ's Eklektikos, and the self-produced Â"Down in Luck EP,Â" recorded in half-a-warehouse on AustinÂ's eastside.
The tone of Down in Luck is blue-based, and honesty rules the day. BrownÂ's sturdy melody leads the parade on Â"CominÂ' AroundÂ" (about his chance meeting with Robbie Robertson) into the deadpan decent night of rest on Â"Staring at the Sun.Â" Hess nods towards the blue note in Â"Manhattan,Â" and the EPÂ's closer, Â"Evel Knievel.Â"
Having formed King Tears with bassist Chad Shaw and drummer Roberto Sanchez (Milton Mapes), the band took the project electric and recorded a full-length album, Â"Rope Chair Needle,Â" at Moonlight TowersÂ' studio center, The Bridge. The results brought invitations to tribute shows for The Who and The Faces as well as airplay on 3wKÂ's Underground Radio and SeattleÂ's KEXP.
Christopher Gray of the Austin Chronicle remarked on the albumÂ's dusty revelry, Â"steady, unforced tempos, and well-placed banjo and harmonica, lend an unmistakable air of Big Pink to the proceedings Â… Â'Beg Me to FollowÂ' invites the Grooveline Horns inside for some shambling fireside Stonesery, and Â'Comin' AroundÂ' choogles along like John Fogerty bumping into the Faces at last call.Â"
King Tears completed recording their 3rd release in December of 2005, and the team has been working toward a national release: Â"Our songs feel like theyÂ're singing for a bigger congregation,Â" says Hess, Â"and the congregation, our live audiences, are reacting accordingly.Â"
