Originally from Dundee, Mark lived in Manchester and different places around Scotland. In the last few years he lived in his one man tent by the banks of Loch Tay - looking after a small herd of goats - and then in Tombreck, where he carried out a lot of building work for the local community.
Mark writes songs inspired by Leonard Cohen and Ivor Cutler, which he sings in his own distinctive style, often accompanied by his good friends Iain Stewart and Katy MacLeod, who play piano, fiddle, double bass, accordion and mandolin... amongst other instruments!!!
His songs are populated by goats and horses as well as small town pushermen and crazy farmers, plus Bin Laden and the Loch Tay Talibans.... ???
... well, Marcus used to busk a lot in Perth, a small town nearby. After the September 11th affair, people passing by used to call him Osama Bin Laden because of his appearance.
In the subsequent Afghanistan episode there was news coverage of the Taliban in Kabul. In this Taliban members were seen driving around in a Renault Â'Traffic' van. The back doors of the van had been removed and a machine gun fixed on to the van.
At the same time, there were two men on Loch Tay who had an identical van; same colour and they both had long beards.
Someone local saw the news footage of Kabul and said: "Oh, it's George and Iain!". From then on they were fondly known as the Taliban.
When Marcus moved to Loch Tay and met them, they said "Hello, we're the Taliban" , to which he replied: "Nice to meet you, I'm Osama Bin Laden". They said "Well, you'd better come and join us then!".
Ever since then they've worked together up and down the Loch side.
