On July 16, Austin-based rock quartet, The Steps, release their newest EP Flight Path. Now veterans of the Austin independent rock scene, The Steps made their recording debut with a 7” vinyl single, Outlaw, on Young and Lost Club Records (UK). The single generated a Japan album release in April 2008 with Kurofune Records. All before leaving high school.

Southern California alternative/post-punk quintet Funeral Party is one of our new favorite bands. They’re so new they don’t have an album yet, but that hasn’t stopped the buzz from building. Their reputation for explosive, play-like-there’s-no-tomorrow live shows has earned the young band opening slots on national tours for the likes of Trail of Dead and Julian Casablancas, as well as recording time in The Mars Volta’s studio.
In March of 2009, Double Stereo launched with a SXSW showcase at Tiniest Bar in Texas, which really isn’t so tiny to be honest. Converting from the old cdFuse.com site, Double Stereo garnered quite the buzz early with great acts and enthusiastic crowds. One of the many bands we had performing was Lights Resolve out of New York.

If you haven’t seen it yet, Spin magazine has put out their list of the best albums in 2009. While I personally disagree with their number one spot, they hit on some great albums throughout the list. Honorable mentions include Gallows, Them Crooked Vultures, Dirty projectors and The Big Pink. There are even a few albums that I’ve started listening to since their list published. Make sure to check it out.
Cage the Elephant is an American rock band that has seen sweeping success with the their single “A’int No Rest For the Wicked.” They’ve been making waves across the pond for quite some time as they traveled to the UK tour their freshman release but lucky for us states side music fans they’ve been gaining notoriety at home. They recently brought their crazy over the top stage show to Antone’s Austin on Tuesday December 1st. I’m not the only one that was excited for them to be gracing Clifford Antone’s stage for their second time. I recently got the chance to chat with Lincoln Parish lead guitarist for Cage the Elephant and he was pretty stoked about it too. Lincoln describes his experience with Antone’s during SXSW as a “religious experience” he said he could feel the presence of Stevie Ray Vaughn and the spirit of the old blues musicians that inspired him to pick up a guitar in the first place.
