On July 16, Austin-based rock quartet, The Steps, release their newest EP Flight Path. Now veterans of the Austin independent rock scene, The Steps made their recording debut with a 7” vinyl single, Outlaw, on Young and Lost Club Records (UK). The single generated a Japan album release in April 2008 with Kurofune Records. All before leaving high school.

Would you expect any less than scene stopping sound from April Smith with a band called The Great Picture Show? Sometimes a name can say everything; in this case the name gently scratches the surface. This weekend I popped in April Smith’s newest release Songs for a Sinking Ship and fell in love (as in L-O-V-E) with her cute as a button, quick-witted, and baroque lyrical style. This album has ageless big band sound with swinging ragtime beats and horns and infused with modern pop and blues rock. It even comes complete with Smith’s crooning fit for a classic 1930’s cabaret.

Emo’s Austin hosts some of the hottest acts in indie rock. It’s no small wonder they’d be hosting the crowd pleasing fast and fun loving Hockey to headline this Friday April 2.
